Membership Changes

Dear Wonderful Monarca Community,

“Thrive, not just survive!” Since June 1st, when Tricia Melka became the new owner of Monarca in Flight, this has been the new goal at Monarca. What it’s really about is moving Monarca forward towards a bigger, brighter, more diverse future. We hope you’ve noticed a few positive changes to the schedule already, as well as the addition of several great workshops. We believe these are just the beginning of some of the amazing things to come.

In order to move towards our goal of “thriving,” we have come to realize that certain aspects of our very generous membership system need to change. No changes will be made to drop ins or punchcards- price and inclusions remain the same

Beginning on October 1st, all annual memberships will be brought up-to-date by meeting the 2022 rate of $205/month for the coming year. No other changes to pricing will be made.  However, what memberships include will change.

Annual ($205/month, billed monthly) and Monthly ($260/month, billed monthly) memberships will now include:

  • Eight 90-minute classes, aerial or ground, per month
  • Unlimited open studios
  • Unlimited 60-minute classes
  • 10% discount on 10-class punchcards (class packs are valid for 6 months from date of purchase)

We will also be offering a new, expanded membership for those who don’t fit into the standard membership offering.

Annual ($300/month, billed monthly) and Monthly ($380/month, billed monthly) expanded memberships will include:

  • Twelve 90-minute classes, aerial or ground, per month
  • Unlimited open studios
  • Unlimited 60-minute classes
  • 10% discount on 10-class punchcards (class packs are valid for 6 months from date of purchase)

I know that this change may feel huge, but it is necessary. Classes stay at the low rate of $25/class for those with annual memberships, and $32/class for those with monthly memberships. These are nearly unbeatable prices for the DC area, and that’s without considering the added benefits of the unlimited open gyms and unlimited 60-minute classes.

The other major change will be to our late cancel and no show policies. The cancellation period will now be 12 hours, meaning that students must cancel at least 12 hours prior to class start time. If you late cancel a 90-minute class, you will lose your credit for that class. If you fail to cancel and miss a 90-minute class, you will both lose your credit for that class and incur a $15 no-show fee. For 60-minute classes and open studios, you will incur a $15 no show fee for either a late cancellation or no-show.

This change ensures that many more members of the Monarca community have access to our classes. A longer cancellation window means fewer vacancies and lost opportunities due to no-shows or extremely late cancellations.

Because these are changes to the original agreement, all annual members will have the opportunity to cancel their annual membership if they wish by filling out this form from September 15-October 15.

So, on to some questions-

Why 8 classes per month for the annual membership, and 12 classes per month for the jumbo/extended membership?

After crunching the numbers, we found that two thirds of our members took eight or fewer technique classes per month on average in the past year, and almost 90% took twelve or fewer classes per month. We figured with these two membership offerings we would still be meeting the needs of nearly the entire membership community.

As an annual member, do the eight monthly classes roll over if I don’t use them?

No, the only classes that extend beyond the month are any class punchcards you purchase.

Where will any new revenue generated be going?

These new funds will go towards better compensating our instructors, improving our studio, and expanding our offerings. Tricia also has big plans for the future of the studio and the DC Circus community!

The changes might raise some other questions or concerns, and we are here to answer them for you!
